Paul Marcus has kindly arranged a field trip to Watermouth Bay in North Devon, initially on Tuesday 10th October. Those that cannot manage weekdays may like to visit this location on Saturday 14th Oct.

“Watermouth lies on the North Devon coast between Coombe Martin and Ilfracombe. It is accessible off the A399 heading West from Combe Martin or East from Ilfracombe.  There’s a car park on the Quay.  When I last checked the car park was open daily: £1.50 for 2 hours, £3 for 4 hours, £5 all day.  There is a café there but its opening hours are a little irregular and for that reason, and in case a longer walk on the coast path seems attractive, I’d advocate a packed lunch.

There is lots of interest local to the bay at both high and low tide: boats, good rock formations, a headland walk and a lookout. Following a short but steep climb to Widmouth Head there are many very good viewpoints of the headland looking East across Combe Martin Bay to Hangman Point and Little Hangman Hill. There are attractive small bays off the coastal FP heading West.  For devotees of long exposures, if the seas are at all rough they break on Sexton’s Burrow at the NW end of the bay.

I have attached a map with some key photography locations highlighted.  Note the caves to the East of the bay also.  High tide that day is at 17.06 BST.  As the nights are drawing in I suggest we meet at the quay car park at 11.00.  After looking around locally and then having lunch we could move to a high point as the tide rises.”

        Paul
