Local street photographer Dawn Eagleton presented her approach and work, touching on the ethics of street photography and how she has developed her style as a female photographer in what has traditionally seemed more of a male domain. She cited Vivian Maier and other women street photographers whose influence, reputation and work has grown in regard over recent years. Dawn creates candid portraits of people in natural contexts, often shooting through windows or other ‘layers’ using light to enhance people’s faces and create shapes.
Her work is close up and she is very much aware of the impact of her body language and the importance of maintaining integrity in acknowledging other people’s space and lives – not wishing to intrude or influence, but perhaps acknowledging with a smile or a nod. She feels a smile goes along way. We had a lively discussion together, exploring approaches within street photography.
